David Brent, M.D., Director, Services for Teens at Risk (STAR-Center) Testifies at Congressional Hearing on Suicide Prevention and Treatment
On September 18th, 2014, Dr. David Brent, Director, STAR-Center, testified on Capitol Hill at the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations hearing entitled “Suicide Prevention and Treatment: Helping Loved Ones in Mental Health Crisis.”
The hearing, convened by Subcommittee Chair, U.S. Representative Tim Murphy (of Pittsburgh), examined federal efforts on suicide prevention. Congressman Murphy is conducting an investigation of the mental health system nationwide. His bipartisan legislation, The Helping Families In Mental Health Crisis Act (H.R. 3717), is cosponsored by 100 members in the House of Representatives.
Others providing testimony at the hearing included former Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart; Acting US Surgeon General Boris Lushniak, M.D., Christine Moutier, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and Joel Dvoskin, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Arizona.
